The drafting of your application specification and claims to define
that which the inventor regards as the inventor's invention is both
a skill and a science. It is a science in that patent and prior
art searches have become highly effective, now that so much public
material is available via internet. And the drafing of claims is
an skill inasmuch as it is the practitioner's skill that results
in the broadest possible claims to protect yuor invention, yet not
so broad that your claims read on prior art.
